Finding Comfort in Honesty: How Deathday Cards is Redefining Sympathy in Times of Loss

For decades, the traditional greeting card industry has treated grief like a one-size-fits-all experience. Filled with glossed-over sentiments and passive clichés, standard sympathy cards often leave recipients feeling more awkward and isolated than supported.

Lindsay, founder of Deathday Cards, set out to change that narrative. Built on the belief that it is never too late to reach out, Deathday Cards creates thoughtful, honest designs for every stage of mourning, from the immediate aftermath of a loss to the anniversary nobody else remembered, the first holiday with an empty chair, or the random Tuesday when grief shows up uninvited.

A Mission Born From Real Experience

Lindsay’s journey to entrepreneurship started early. As a teenager, she often joked about starting a “dysfunctional family greeting card business,” recognizing early on that real-life relationships rarely fit inside conventional card store molds.

Her true eureka moment arrived in her early twenties while working at a cemetery. Exposed to death, grief, and the mourning process every single day, Lindsay noticed a pervasive issue: when coworkers experienced a loss, those around them struggled with severe awkwardness, unsure of what to say or how to show up. Believing that greeting cards are one of the most powerful platforms to bring comfort, honesty, and even lighthearted warmth to heavy situations, Lindsay decided to launch her own line of real, relatable sympathy cards

Partnering with the OC WBC to Scale Impact

Like many passionate business owners, turning a meaningful concept into a sustainable business required navigating complex strategic steps. Lindsay initially launched an Etsy shop in February 2026, but struggled to generate consistent sales without a structured marketing and branding strategy.

Seeking guidance to take her business to the next level, Lindsay connected with the Orange County Women’s Business Center.

Through tailored support, the OC WBC helped navigate every phase of her business growth, from structured early-stage planning and official business formation to connecting Lindsay with vetted graphic designers to transition from an initial storefront to her very own branded website, to creating a marketing strategy with comprehensive social media audits to build an authentic digital brand presence designed to convert visitors into customers.

Looking Ahead

Today, with a fully launched website, a growing social media footprint, and an expanding product line, Deathday Cards is poised for steady sales growth. More importantly, Lindsay is fulfilling her mission: helping people show up for one another with real messages when it matters most.
